The right computer classes for school students in Kolkata depend on your child’s class. From Class IV to IX, the work is the school’s own computer syllabus plus everyday skills: typing, Windows, Word and Excel at a level that suits the child’s age. From Class X, students can add a professional course such as Python, C, Advanced Excel or AI Playground, and children who are ahead can start coding with Scratch or Python earlier.

At Technosoft Academy in Baguiati, school students attend between 9am and 9pm from Monday to Saturday, and from 12pm to 7pm on Sunday. A child can start with one class a week, which keeps them in touch with computers without crowding out school work.

The short answer

  • Class IV to VIII: the school computer syllabus, typing, Windows, and Word, PowerPoint and Excel basics. Scratch or Python basics for children who are ready.
  • Class IX and X: the board syllabus and its practicals (Java for ICSE, AI or IT for CBSE), then a short professional course after the board exams.
  • Class XI and XII: C, C++, Python or Java for Science students; Advanced Excel, Tally Prime with GST or Power BI for Commerce students.

What each board teaches in computers

Good computer classes for school students in Kolkata start from the board your child’s school follows, because that board sets the practical exam. The table covers the subjects Kolkata parents ask us about most. On a phone, swipe it sideways.

Board and classComputer subjectWhat it covers
CBSE, Class III to VIIIComputational Thinking and AI (new from 2026-27)Puzzles, games and patterns in Class III to V; foundational AI concepts in Class VI to VIII
CBSE, Class IX and XArtificial Intelligence (417) or Information Technology (402), where the school offers themAI basics such as the AI project cycle; or documents, spreadsheets and databases
CBSE, Class XI and XIIComputer Science (083) or Informatics Practices (065)Python programming; Informatics Practices adds data handling with pandas and SQL
ICSE, Class IX and XComputer ApplicationsJava: classes, methods, arrays and strings, with at least 20 lab assignments in the year
ISC, Class XI and XIIComputer ScienceJava programming, Boolean algebra and data structures
WBBSE and WBCHSEComputer subjects vary by schoolWe teach from the textbook your child’s school uses

Two facts in this table change how you plan. The ICSE Class X subject carries 100 marks of practical internal assessment next to the 100-mark theory paper, according to the 2026-27 syllabus summary from Oswal Publishers, so lab practice counts as much as the written paper. And CBSE launched its Computational Thinking and AI curriculum for Classes III to VIII on 1 April 2026, for the 2026-27 session, as the Ministry of Education press release records.

The CBSE curriculum is new, and in The Indian Express in April 2026, a professor at Azim Premji University named teacher preparedness as a significant challenge for it. Extra practice outside school helps a child keep pace while schools settle in. Below Class IX, most ICSE and WBBSE schools choose their own computer textbook, so bring your child’s book to the first class.

Why a phone-savvy child still needs computer classes

Most children use a phone long before they can use a computer properly. ASER 2024, a survey of rural India covering 6,49,491 children, found that 82.2% of 14 to 16-year-olds knew how to use a smartphone. Among them, 57% had used it for study in the previous week, against 76% for social media.

Kolkata is not rural India, but we see the same gap in the children who join us. A phone teaches tapping and scrolling. It does not teach typing, saving files in folders, building a spreadsheet or writing a proper email, and board practicals, college assignments and office jobs need all four. That is why our computer classes for school students in Kolkata still start with the keyboard.

Class-by-class roadmap

This is the order we follow, adjusted to each child’s school syllabus and pace.

1

Class IV and V: keyboard, mouse and Windows

Correct finger positions for typing, using the mouse, and saving work in files and folders. Paint and Word basics come next, along with the school’s computer chapters and safe internet habits.

2

Class VI to VIII: office tools by age

Word, PowerPoint and Excel basics such as simple formulas and charts, alongside the school syllabus. Children who are ahead can start Scratch or Python basics, and AI tools where their syllabus includes them.

3

Class IX and X: board syllabus and practicals

Java for ICSE, AI or IT for CBSE, and the WBBSE textbook used at school, with lab practice for the practical exam. Excel skills keep building in the background.

4

After Class X: a professional course

The months after the board exams suit a short professional course. The next section shows which course fits which plan for Class XI.

Courses from Class X onwards

Students usually join professional courses from Class X. These are the courses that fit each stage.

StageCourses that fit
Class X, alongside or after the board examsOfficeSmart (Basic IT Essentials), Spoken English, Programming with C, Python Programming, AI Playground, Advanced Excel
Class XI and XII, Science or Computer ScienceProgramming with C, Programming with C++, Python Programming (matches the CBSE syllabus), Core Java (matches the ISC syllabus)
Class XI and XII, CommerceAdvanced Excel, Tally Prime with GST, Data Analytics with Power BI
Any streamAI Playground, mywebsite.com (website design basics), Graphic Design, Web Designing, Web Development

The months after Class X are where computer classes for school students in Kolkata turn into career preparation. C and C++ suit students heading for engineering, because first-year programming in many engineering colleges starts with C. Commerce students who learn Excel and Tally before college start B.Com with two tools that commerce internships commonly ask for. AI Playground needs no coding and is open to students of any stream; it runs at our sister institute, Brainware Computer Academy (A Unit of Technosoft), in Baguiati.

Coding and AI: when is a child ready?

We teach Scratch, Python basics and AI tools to school students who are ready for them, not to every child by default. These signs tell us a child is ready:

  • Types without hunting for every key and manages files and folders alone
  • Finishes the school computer chapter early and asks for more
  • Enjoys puzzles, patterns or building things
  • Follows written steps without help

Scratch comes first for most children. It is a free, block-based language from the MIT Media Lab, so a child builds games and animations by snapping blocks together instead of typing code. Python follows once typing is comfortable, and it is the language CBSE uses in Class XI and XII.

With AI tools, the skill worth paying for is judgement: asking a clear question, checking the answer against the textbook and still doing the homework yourself. A child who learns that early gets more from AI in Class XI than one who learned to copy answers.

Timings that fit school

Timings decide whether computer classes for school students in Kolkata last the full school year. Our centre runs classes across the day and the week, so a slot can move around tuition, sports and exams.

9am to 9pmMonday to Saturday
12pm to 7pmSunday
1 class a weekthe minimum, to stay in touch with computers
ICSE, CBSE, WBBSEschool syllabus support from Class IV

Three classes a week suits a child who needs to catch up or has a practical exam coming. One class a week suits a child who wants to keep practising through a busy term. Fees depend on the plan, so contact us for current fees.

Three typical students

Illustrative profiles built from situations parents describe to our counsellors. The names are invented.

I

Ishaan, Class V, CBSE school, Lake Town. Ishaan types with two fingers and finds his school computer book hard.

Plan: two classes a week after school, covering typing practice, Windows and Word, and his school’s computer chapters.

M

Meghna, Class VIII, ICSE school, Kestopur. Meghna finishes her school computer work early and loves puzzles.

Plan: one class a week on Sunday, starting with Scratch and moving to Python basics once her typing is quick.

R

Rohan, Class X, WBBSE school, Dum Dum. Rohan has free months after his Madhyamik exams and plans to take Science in Class XI.

Plan: OfficeSmart in the first month, then Python Programming or Programming with C before Class XI begins.

Five questions to ask any computer centre

Ask these before you book computer classes for school students in Kolkata, ours included.

1

Will the trainer follow my child’s school textbook?

Board practicals follow the school’s book. Ask the centre to show how its classes map to your child’s chapters.

2

Does each child get their own computer?

Sharing a machine halves practice time. Ask to see the lab while a class is running.

3

How will I know what my child learned?

Ask how the centre shares progress with parents, and how often. A centre that tracks attendance and topics can answer in one sentence.

4

Can the schedule change around exams?

School exam dates move every term. Ask whether your child can switch slots or add classes before a practical.

5

What happens after Class X?

A centre that also teaches professional courses can take your child from typing to Python or Tally without starting again somewhere else.

Terms parents hear

School circulars and course ads use these words often. Here is what each one means.

Computational thinking

Breaking a problem into steps and spotting patterns. CBSE now teaches it from Class III, mostly through puzzles and games.

Scratch

A free, block-based coding language from the MIT Media Lab. Children build games and stories without typing code.

Python

A text-based programming language. CBSE uses it in Computer Science and Informatics Practices for Class XI and XII.

Java and BlueJ

Java is the language of ICSE Computer Applications and ISC Computer Science. BlueJ is a beginner-friendly editor that many schools use for it.

Computer Science vs Informatics Practices

Both are CBSE Class XI and XII subjects that use Python. Computer Science goes deeper into programming; Informatics Practices focuses on data.

AI tools

Apps such as chatbots and image generators. The useful skill is checking their answers, not copying them.

A child who can type, save a file and build a simple spreadsheet by Class VIII walks into the board practicals with one less thing to fear.
